Babette Brumback Statistical Consulting, LLC

Babette Anne Brumback is an American biostatistician known for her work on causal inference.  She is the author of the recently published textbook, Fundamentals of Causal Inference: With R (2021), and in 2023 she taught a full day short course on the textbook to six American Statistical Association chapters (sponsored by the ASA) and two Canadian organizations.  Babette is Professor Emerita of Biostatistics at the University of Florida, and she is an elected member of Delta Omega and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

Babette earned her bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Virginia in 1988.  She attended the University of California, Berkeley for graduate study, where she earned her MA in Statistics in 1992 and her PhD in 1996.  Her dissertation, Statistical Methods for Hormone Data, was supervised by John A. Rice.   

After postdoctoral research at Harvard University, Babette became an Assistant Professor of biostatistics at the University of Washington in 1999, where she became affiliated with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  She later accepted positions at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2002, and at the University of Florida in 2004, where she remained until her recent retirement in 2022.

Babette’s statistical research has concentrated on methods for longitudinal data analysis, causal modeling, bias adjustment, and analysis of data from complex sampling designs. She has also collaborated extensively on public health and medical studies concerning a broad array of research areas. Her professional activities include serving as Associate Chair for Education of the University of Florida Department of Biostatistics, as Chair Elect, Chair, and Past Chair of the American Statistical Association Section on Statistics in Epidemiology, as President of the Florida Chapter of the American Statistical Association, as a member of the National Institutes of Health Study Section on Clinical and Integrative Cardiovascular Sciences, as a committee member for the National Academy of Medicine, and on an Advisory Panel for the MMS Program of the National Science Foundation. She has also served as Associate Editor of Biometrics and as Statistical Editor of Psychosomatic Medicine.
